Winamp, the self-proclaimed "Ultimate Media Player", is indeed the best media player I've found yet. Though the free version might lack a few features those who purchase CDs and store videos on their computer will definitely miss, it makes up for it by being an awesome media player in general. Those who want the CD-ripping capabilities should keep their Windows Media Player around; those who want the video-playing capabilities should seriously consider the VLC Media Player as it will play nearly any video format.
